Gond

Gond paintings are described as ‘line work’.The lines are carefully drawn through dots and dashes in such a way as to portray a sense of movement in still images. Bright colours like white, red, blue and yellow are the most striking feature of these paintings. Paints used for these paintings are naturally derived from charcoal, coloured soil, plant sap, mud, flowers, leaves and even cow dung. The artist sketches the outline of the work first and then fills the individual areas. No pencil or rough drawing is required in the initial stages. When filling human/animal figures, the eyes are always completed at the end as they believe that giving sight to the figures puts life into the artwork.
